What is Gelatin Halal certification?

2025-09-19

The Halalcertification for gelatin indicates that gelatin products comply with Islamic halal standards, ensuring their raw materials, production processes, and ingredients meet the requirements of Islamic teachings. The specific key points are as follows:

  1. Core Requirements
  2. Ingredient Compliance

- Pork-derived ingredients (e.g., pork skin gelatin) and derivatives from non-halal slaughtered animals (e.g., beef tallow) are prohibited. For instance, if lipstick contains pork fat, it must be replaced with plant-based wax; glycerin in toothpaste must have a clearly stated plant origin.

- Ingredients such as alcohol, narcotics, or raptor meat must not be included.

  1. Production Hygiene

- Equipment must be isolated from non-halal products, and production personnel must receive training on Islamic doctrines to avoid "religious contamination." For example, Malaysia requires that there must be Muslim supervisors overseeing raw material handling on the production line

  1. Scope of Application

When gelatin is used as a food ingredient (e.g., in capsules, gelling agents) or an ingredient in cosmetics, it must obtain Halal certification. Uncertified products are not allowed to be used in the production of halal food or pharmaceuticals; otherwise, they may violate the regulations of regions such as Indonesia and Malaysia

4.Notes

Currently, China prohibits labeling "halal" on non-food products (e.g., cosmetics, toothpaste). However, products exported to Muslim-majority regions such as Indonesia and Malaysia must comply with the local mandatory certification requirements.
